Asthma Swim Program

The Asthma Swim Program is a successful asthma education program unique to the Northern Territory which encourages kids aged from 18 months old to participate in regular physical activity via weekly swim lessons.

About the Asthma Swim Program

As asthma affects 1 in 10 children in Australia and is one of the most common reasons for school absenteeism and for children being admitted to hospital, the Asthma Foundation NT developed the Asthma Swim Program to work with local families to assist with engaging children with asthma to do regular physical activity while their families receive support in asthma management.

The program has been successfully running for 17 years and is very unique to the Territory.

One of the qualified asthma educators attends the swim classes each week to provide support and answer questions for parents/carers in a relaxed informal setting. This encourages the development of a relationship with the participating families so that they feel comfortable in discussing asthma management strategies while their children are swimming. It is hoped that this program will provide a lifetime benefit to all participants by establishing a routine of regular exercise along with appropriate asthma management.

Education and support for families

The swim program provides a weekly group and individualized education and support to families whose children have asthma. The children will also receive a half hour swimming lesson every Saturday morning provided by accredited instructors at the Goldfish Bowl in Yarrawonga.

Who is the program for?

The program is for children aged 18 months to 10 years old who suffer with Asthma.

Join the Asthma Swim Program

To become involved in the Asthma Swim Program your child needs to have a diagnosis of Asthma and an action plan in place from their GP.

To apply for the program, you will need to have an initial consult with an Asthma Educator at either our Parap office or Palmerston Clinic which is run on Wednesday afternoons. If accepted into the program you will then be required to become a member of Asthma Foundation NT and ensure your child maintains regular attendance at the weekly swim lessons.
