Asthma Aware for Community Organisations

Asthma Aware training is designed to educate organisations on how to identify and treat asthma. The program is aimed to increase their staff & volunteers confidence and knowledge in supporting people with asthma and to provide a safe environment.

What is covered in the program?

  • What is asthma?
  • Signs & symptoms of asthma
  • Signs & symptoms of worsening asthma
  • Linked conditions
  • Triggers (exercise/cold/flu/environmental)
  • Knowledge of medication - reliever / preventer
  • Knowledge and practical experience of how to use a puffer & spacer
  • Knowledge of Emergency Asthma Management
  • Asthma First Aid (4x4x4)
  • Asthma Aware Policies and Guidelines for childcare
  • Importance of Asthma Action Plans
  • Duty of care

Who should attend?

All staff and volunteers are recommended to attend the program

  • Management
  • Administration Staff
  • Support Staff
  • Sporting groups
  • Community groups

Who should attend?

The organisation will receive a certificate which is valid for 2 years and entitles them to display the Asthma Aware sticker on their door and the Asthma Aware logo on their website as long as the organisation meets the following essential criteria:

  • AFNT Asthma Awareness training provided to all staff.
  • First aid officers/nominated personnel have current AFNT approved First Aid Training.
  • First aid officers/nominated personnel have current AFNT approved First Aid Training.
  • Asthma emergency kits are accessible to all staff and volunteers in the workplace and includes a spacer and in-date blue reliever puffer (masks for under 5’s) and concise written instructions on emergency procedures in Asthma emergency procedures.
  • Asthma first aid posters on display in all central locations.
  • First aid & other health policies explicitly include Asthma.

This training can be provided on Zoom for organisations outside of the Darwin/Palmerston area.

  • Services are encouraged to become a community member of The Asthma Foundation NT ($100 for one year)
