NT Mask Mandate

NT Mask Mandate

Due to rising numbers of COVID-19 and community transmission in the Territory it is now mandated that All Territorians must wear a mask when indoors.

Why should I wear a mask?

  • It is a direction from the NT Chief Health Office https://coronavirus.nt.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_fi...
  • Wearing a face mask protects yourself as well as others in our community.
  • Face masks worn by an infected person has proven to reduce the risk of community transmission particularly if a person is unaware, they are positive to COVID-19.
  • Face masks also reduce your risk of contracting COVID-19 if you happened to come into contact with an infected person in the community.

The Australian Health Protection Principal Committee (AHPPC) and many other countries recognise the role face masks take in suppressing the spread of COVID-19.

When DO I need to wear a mask?

  • Indoors when you are unable to maintain a physical distance of 1.5 metres.
  • At places like the supermarket, shopping centre, the hairdresser and beauty salons
  • When going out for dinner – you can remove it when seated, eating and drinking
  • On public transport, taxis or ride sharing services
  • At your workplace - If you are a worker who comes into close contact with patrons, or if you work in an environment where physical distancing of 1.5m cannot be applied

When DON'T I need to wear a mask?

  • Inside your home
  • Playing indoor sports
  • At the gym

Children under 12 years of age do not need to wear a mask.

There is no mandate for you to wear a mask when outdoors, but the NT Health Department highly recommend that you wear one if you can’t maintain a physical distance of 1.5m

Can I get a mask exemption?

  • Mask exemptions CAN ONLY be given by a GP.

If you are wanting to get an exemption, please consider the high risk of catching COVID-19 and the risk to the Territory, if you are unable to wear a mask - ask yourself – Am I better to stay at home and stay safe?
